FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
The FISU World University Games (formerly known as the Universiade) are one of the largest and most prestigious multi-sport events in the world for university athletes. The sports programme of the biennial event, which takes place in both summer and winter editions, includes 15 compulsory sports, with the possibility for the organisers to choose three more. In 2003, a record 174 countries participated in the Summer Universiade in Daegu. Ten years later, at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, a record 11,759 participants took part. At the last Universiade in 2023 in Chengdu, China, 6,500 athletes from 113 countries competed for 269 sets of medals across 18 sports.
RHEIN RUHR 2025 FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
The next FISU World University Games will take place from July 17 to 28, 2025, in Germany’s Rhein-Ruhr region. The event will welcome over 8,000 athletes from 150 countries, with Slovak representatives set to compete in 13 sports, including athletics, swimming, badminton, beach volleyball, archery, artistic gymnastics, taekwondo, and rowing.
SPORTS PROGRAMME
The sports program of the Rhein-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games consists of 18 sports.
The event will take place across six cities – Bochum, Duisburg, Essen, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Hagen, and Berlin.
The Games will feature 18 sports disciplines – 15 compulsory and 3 optional (3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, and rowing).
For the first time, 3×3 wheelchair basketball will be included in the program.

CHENGDU 2021 FISU WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
The upcoming FISU World University Games will be held from 28 July to 8 August 2023 in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan province. The Games were originally scheduled for 2021 and 2022 respectively, but due to a number of reasons (the COVID-19 pandemic, shifts in the sporting calendar, pandemic measures taken by the Chinese government), the International University Sports Federation FISU has decided to hold the Games in 2023. Chengdu will become the fourth Chinese city to host this prestigious multi-sport event, after Beijing, Harbin and Shenzhen.
