Changchun to host the 33rd Winter Universiade in 2027

From 15-25 January 2027, the 33^rd Winter Universiade will take place in Northern China’s Jilin Province.

On 26 November 2025, the International University Sports Federation (FISU) awarded the organisation of the 33^rd Winter Universiade to Changchun, Jilin Province in Northern China.

In January 2027, the best student-athletes from over 50 countries and all five continents will discover the Jingyuetan, Songhua and Beidahu ski resorts, experience the winter sports installations in Changchun and enjoy many cultural and educational activities from Northern China in this unique event.

On the afternoon of 26 November 2025 in Changchun, the potential future organisers presented an enthusiastic, complete and convincing bid to the International University Sports Federation’s Steering Committee Members.

Based on this, as well as the positive feedback previously received from the Evaluation Committee and the Executive Committee, the Steering Committee awarded the organisation of the 33^rd Winter Universiade to Changchun, Jilin Province and announced the good news during a press conference with over 40 media representatives from the main Chinese regional, provincial and national outlets.

The Chengdu FISU Games legacy

“We would like to warmly thank our Chinese friends for their enthusiasm and the quality of their work”, said FISU President Leonz Eder, “I am particularly grateful to Party Secretary Mr Huang for bringing the spirit, success and legacy of the Chengdu Games 2023 to Jilin province and for promoting the Winter Universiade project so strongly.”

“The students from the 68 universities in the Jilin Province, but also the population and the economy will benefit from a fantastic boost” added FISU’s Secretary General/CEO Matthias Remund right after the signing of the contract. “The 33rd Winter Universiade will leave a strong legacy here. For the infrastructure, for the organisers and volunteers. Everyone here in Jilin Province, in Changchun, Jilin City, and also in the snow sports resorts will be experts after the event. This is a real investment for your province, for your cities and for your ski resorts.”

The Capital of Powder Snow

“Changchun, situated within the world’s golden latitude zone for ice and snow, is renowned as the “Capital of Powder Snow””, explained Changchun Mayor, Gu Gang. “It stands as a premier ski destination boasting 6 major ski resorts, 52 ski runs and a wide array of winter sports facilities. As a renowned sports city, it has hosted major events such as the Asian Winter Games and the National Winter Games, and has nurtured champions of both Summer and Winter Olympic Games.”
