A total of more than 60 Slovak athletes – university students will participate in the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China (28 July – 8 August 2023) under the auspices of the Slovak Association of University Sport (SAUS).
The head of delegation of the Slovakia university team, Peter Hamaj, informed that the Slovaks nominated athletes – academics in 15 from eighteen sports, which the Chinese organizers included in the program of the global multi-sport event for university students. “The Slovakia university team will be represented in up to two team sports – women’s basketball and men’s water polo – and more than 60 athletes will travel to China, which is one of the largest Slovak teams ever. Of the sports on the programme of the 31st FISU World University Games, we will not only feature in volleyball, modern gymnastics and the Chinese martial art of wushu.”
At the last Summer FISU World University Games in Naples, Italy in 2019, the most successful Slovak athletes were shooters, thanks to which Slovakia won a complete medal set (1-1-2). Patrik Jány shot gold in air rifle, Filip Marinov took silver, Adrian Drobny took bronze in trap and the shooting team added bronze in rifle.
During the 12 days of competition, more than ten thousand university athletes from over 120 countries will compete on 45 sports venues at the FISU Chengdu 2021 World University Games.
The name list of the Slovakia university team that will travel to China will be known after 15 June, when the SAUS Executive Committee will approve the final nomination.
